CICC Parent Training Seminars

CICC offers one day parent training seminars in cooperation with corporations, schools, churches and other organizations committed to improving the quality of parenting in their communities.

Each seminar is divided into carefully sequenced learning segments that help parents learn proven strategies and skills for increasing their children's positive behavior and decreasing their negative behaviors, thereby bringing parents and children closer together and strengthening families.

Led by experienced parent training professionals, these seminars are tailored to the unique socioeconomic and cultural needs of the parent participants.

In order to facilitate parent attendance and to provide an enriching experience for the entire family, each seminar is reasonably priced and includes child care as well as a luncheon.

Three separate seminars are available:

Confident Parenting

This seminar teaches parents how to consistently and effectively increase the times when their children behave positively. It also introduces parents to proven limit-setting and discipline skills that they can use to decrease their children's misbehavior. Strategies for understanding the causes of children's behavior and for creating effective family rules are taught. Parents also learn specific skills such as Effective Praise, Mild Social Disapproval, Ignoring, Time Out and the Point System - and they learn to put these skills together into an integrated approach to confidently raising today's children and achieving harmony in the home.

Effective Black Parenting

Raising children in our modern society is an extremely difficult task. This is especially true for parents of African-American heritage. Black parents face special problems that arise from our country's history of racism and discrimination and which make it more difficult for them to raise children who are successful and achieving adults. This seminar teaches a set of parenting strategies and child management skills from within an African-American perspective such as The Pyramid of Success for Black Children, Modern Black Self-Discipline, Effective Praising, and Chit-Chat Time. Parents learn to put these skills and strategies to work in their families so that they can raise proud and confident African-American children.

Los Niņos Bien Educados

Latino parents, and especially those who are Spanish-speaking, face unique challenges in raising children in the United States. This seminar is respectful of the unique traditions and customs of Latino families and is sensitive to the variety of adjustments that are made as they acculturate to life in our modern multi-cultural society. From the perspective of their specific cultural frame of reference, parents learn a sequence of proven strategies and skills for promoting and maintaining those child behaviors defined as constituting "bien educados" (well educated in both a social and academic sense) and for reducing those reflecting "mal educados". This seminar can be offered in either English or Spanish and can be customized to the acculturation needs of the parents involved.

Arranging and Conducting a Seminar ...

CICC provides expert consultation on selecting the appropriate seminar for your organization and on how to implement it.

The consultations include guidelines on recruiting and registering parents, securing an appropriate training site and child care, providing meals and refreshments, and evaluating the semimar.

Then CICC sends a professional instructor to your community to lead the seminar, and also provides each parent with a guidebook on what is taught in the seminar.
