This "Parent Training Program Showcase Conference Plus Instructor Training Workshop" approach was utilized and researched by CICC in the 1970's under a five-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. Its success in educating and preparing professionals was acknowledged by the approach being termed "a national training model."

Soon after this model was shown to be so effective, other federal government agencies, like the U.S. Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (now the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention) and several state agencies, adopted this CICC-developed training model. Many other state and local organizations have subsequently adopted this CICC model, and have often conducted these conferences and workshops in collaboration with CICC.
