"Parent education is an
idea whose time has come ... and come ... and come," so
says Michael H. Popkin, Ph.D, in a review of the new
book, The
Positive Parent: Raising Healthy, Happy, and Successful
Children by Kerby T. Alvy, Ph.D.
Popkin,
who has long been known as one of America's
leading authorities on parent education, goes on to say,
"Kerby Alvy, a champion in this field for thirty years,
has written a book that can give direction to parents
and leaders wanting sound information on how to make it
happen."
"The
heart of The Positive Parent is built around a
set of sixteen guidelines Kerby lays out to raise
healthy, happy and successful children. This includes
concepts such as "Use firm and fair leadership;" "Create
a home environment that supports education;" "Teach
children about sexuality;" and "Manage your children's
media and technology exposure," says
Popkin.
Popkin points out, "One
chapter that you will rarely see included in a parenting
book is the one covering 'Skill-Building Programs and
Services.' The reason is simple: Most authors and
publishers of parenting books do not care to promote the
parenting books and programs of other authors and
publishers."
"Fortunately, Alvy and
his publisher do not seem bothered by this and have
included descriptions and overviews of eighteen of the
most widely accepted programs available to parent
educators for teaching effective parenting methods. From
general parenting programs such as Active Parenting
and Parent Effectiveness Training to specific
programs for diverse populations such as Effective
Black Parenting and Positive Indian Parenting,
this section gives the reader a helpful orientation
to the expanding world of parent
education."
