(Description
of Dr. Alvy's Keynote Address to be given at Prince
George's County Schools in Maryland and for the
Christina School District in
Delaware)
Positive
Parenting: The Foundation of Student
Achievement
The
quality of parenting that children receive in the home
has been shown in study after study to play a
significant role in how students behave and achieve in
school.
Regardless
of the economic and cultural backgrounds of families,
parents who raise their children in a positive,
authoritative way, and who become positively involved in
their children's formal education, have consistently
been found to have children who succeed academically and
socially.
Thus,
it is in the best interests of students and schools to
educate all parents to be as positive and as effective
as possible. And there is now an array of
excellent, research-informed parenting skill-building
programs that can be used to teach and encourage parents
to be the best mothers and fathers they can
be. |
