The question that Dr. Alvy's presentation is designed
to answer is similar to Rodney King's question when
the race riots occurred in 1992 after the
controversial verdict on his beating by police
officers. Communities like Los Angeles continue to
experience violent conflicts that are racially charged,
such as those that occurred recently at Jefferson
High School in Los Angeles.
Dr. Alvy is a national authority on effective parenting
and parenting education, and the founder and
executive director of the
Center for the Improvement of Child Caring
(CICC). He is particularly noted for having developed national model parenting programs for African and Latino Americans. He will approach this question first by
exploring the differences that divide various racial
and cultural groups, and the similarities that unite
them.
He will bring attention to comprehensive approaches
to unite all groups in a community to get along
better, using examples where schools and parents
have successfully worked together. His presentation
will highlight actions that parents, teachers, school
administrators and other community leaders can
engage in right now to maximizing being able to
answer this question in the affirmative.
His presentation is supplemented by videotaped footage of youths discussing their heritage and the need for tolerance and respect. Other videos exemplify the components of comprehensive community approaches.
